We got our baby furniture delivered this week. It was delivered at 5:30 on wednesday, clearly the last top for the delivery people. Despite getting an amazing deal (thanks to my bargaining skills), it was still a pretty expensive purchase all things considered. As part of the purchase, we got the shipping and assembly included since I knew I would be in no mood to put that stuff together myself.
We got 5 things delivered: the crib, dresser, hutch, chair and nightstand. Of those 5 things, 2 of them were screwed up in some fashion. We’re unsure if it was a result of the manufacturer or the assembler, but without judging books by covers, I can assure you that they did not look like the most proficient pair of assemblers. My thoughts were confirmed after seeing the clearly misaligned crib (we’re talking brutally-no-where-close to being correctly aligned arms of the crib) plus shelves on the hutch that did not physically touch the back of wall of the hutch (picture a book case where the horizontal piece of wood the books sit on is 2 inches away from the back of the bookshelf).
Things like this are really irritating to me. It was pretty clear that the deliverers were in no mood to do their best work, which was especially confirmed when I called them on it and got them to verbally admit that there’s no way this is how it was "supposed to be." They fully intended on leaving the furniture assembled incorrectly and gtfo as their day was ending. After pointing out and stating the obvious, they wrote that it was incorrect on our invoice and passed the buck right over to their manager for her to fix.
One would think the way the economy is, people would be taking some pride in what they do…but that doesn’t appear to be the american way these days. It’s a good reminder to me that as a representative of DC, I should try to be as helpful as possible to people. I think DC as a company does a much better job at this than most companies. I feel like our close knit community is unmatched in the market and unmatched in most american businesses. I hope the members feel the same way.
If you’ve never caught the movie "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas, I would highly recommend it. It’s about this guy who gets fed up with everything going wrong and snaps…he goes on a rampage pointing out what’s wrong with the world today. If anyone needed the 8 fold path to poker enlightenment, it was this guy
Here’s one of my favorite scenes from the movie…but you should definitely watch the whole thing to feel the full effect:
