Back from all my travels

Last 2 weeks or so has been pretty wild with traveling all over. Two weekends ago i was down in MS to visit my mom and dad and catch So. Miss's homecoming game and win vs SMU. It was fun to see mom and relax in the dirtay-souf for a while. During all of October, but especially the last two weeks, my time has been cram packed with working on me and my uncle's site Preemas.com which we finally got semi launched (at least it's up on the server -- still quite a few bugs to fix and functional pieces we need to add) as well as lots of coaching hours, responding to lots of threads on the +EV Poker forums and finally a little bit of my own poker playing. I've only played about 17,000 hands and I've run pretty bad this month so I'm down about 4k right now.

I'm not that worried about it. I plan on trying to get a lot of hands in this last week of October and I'm confident I can pull out of the down turn. 17k hands is nothing in terms of variance at 5/10 and 10/20. If a few hands at 10/20 hold I'm in decent shape for the month. that's how it goes though.

Another new student is starting this week which brings my regular students up to about 7 now. I've had a lot of interest shown from some 2+2 coaching threads in both small stakes NL and mid stakes NL forums and just general interest in my blog. I'd like to do a video for my students sometime soon but I haven't had the opportunity being so busy with everything else.

So this last weekend I traveled out to Huntington, WV to visit my sister which conveniently coincided with the So Miss v Marshall game that was last night (also broadcast on ESPN). Marshall Univ, usually a very strong school (where my dad used to be defensive coordinator) has slipped a bit in the last few years after my dad and head coach Bob Pruett left. The old defensive coordinator from “the” ohio state univ took over the head coaching spot and although pop had the opportunity to stay he chose to head down to MS to be closer to Mom. Thankfully he did.

The game only was in doubt late in the 4th quarter where Marshall tried to make a run at winning but the golden eagles held onto the lead they gained in the first quarter. It was really weird for me to be on the other side of the stadium this weekend as for 5 years we were bleeding green when dad was coaching at Marshall. For the second year now we’ve been rooting against them (at least, whenever it effects So Miss). Last year we saw the game down in Hattiesburg, MS so this was the first time dad had been back up in Huntington, WV to coach. As old MAC and current CUSA schools know, Marshall has never been an easy place to play, especially when all the hillbillies are smashed and screaming and used to winning. This year seemed a bit different as Marshall is probably the best winless team in the country (ya I know, not saying a whole lot, but they really are pretty good on offense). The crowd was dead for the most part and the old tradition of “empty the stadiuim during half time to get the drunkenness recharged” didn’t seem to hold true. Instead it was “empty the stadium because we have no hope of winning”.

One older gentlemen before the game who saw me decked out in the So Miss hat and shirt actually welcomed me to Huntington. He had no way of knowing that my family had lived there for 5 years (and sister still there) but it was a nice gesture. I was semi surprised at the hospitality. It took all the way until the few remaining minutes of the 4th quarter when the game was out of reach for The Herd when the more familiar side of the fans came out. “Southern Miss sucks!” one of West Virginia’s finest shouted at me as he was about to walk out of the stadium.” Three simple words came out of my mouth in response: “Oh-and-seven” I replied. Pwnd.

When we weren't at the game, my sis and I were reliving our youth by playing some video games, watching TV and just generally making each other laugh. It was a great time and it really reminds me how thankful I am to have such a great family. If family isn’t something you regularly sit back and express thanks for, you should. I’m very blessed/lucky in that regard.

So this week I really need to focus on wisely spending my time to get plenty of hands in, organize coaching schedules, and still find time to work on our website.

Time out

I’m so freaking cramped in this airplane right now. Have you seen that commercial where the guy has knees jammed against the seat in front of him, his laptop on the meal tray and the person in front of him slammed back the seat in recline mode. That is me right now with the added bonus that the drink cart is stopped at my row so my arm/elbow/leg must be 100% confined within the seat. I’m 6’4” about 210lbs so I’m not exactly the smallest guy on the plane. If I was claustrophobic this would be really baddddd

Time in

Ok random observation time:

-For the first time ever I’ve witnessed someone drinking bottled water through a straw stuck into the bottle. Weird…
-Have you ever heard someone use the phrase “Same difference” ? Were they ever actually comparing two differences that were the same/similar? I’ve never heard it used like that which makes me wonder how the phrase ever came to be.
-Have you ever noticed that at all airport baggage claims everyone crowds up to the front way before their bags even get there? Several times I’ve noticed this phenomenon… usually when at the baggage claim I stand a good 3-4 feet back from the conveyor belt because I figure if everyone did that it would be simple enough for each person to swoop in and snag their bag as it’s coming down. Instead people just act like you aren’t there and step directly in front of you to stand awaiting their luggage…and with everyone crammed up there obviously some senior citizen gets screwed out of any chance of getting their bags.
-Have you ever noticed that many TV shows are advertised as “All-New” when in fact many episodes are only partially new or not new at all? That’s really annoying to me. Like those shows at the beginning of a the season where they recap everything that happened in the previous season. They always say “All-new” but in fact little or none of the episode is new at all.

I guess that’s it. Prob blog again sometime this week then do an October recap at some point.

Good luck, play well, or at least run hot.

Aaron
