Goodbye November

November was a very frustrating month of poker for me. Possibly the most frustrating of the year. I felt, especially at the beginning of the month, I was playing some of the best poker of my life, however the results certainly didn't reflect that. I tried my hand at more HU play, and while I feel like I've gotten better at HU, and I don't claim to be a HU expert, I ran much below expectation. Also november was the first time in a long time I developed a bad tilt in a couple sessions, but I can say after looking through my hands for this month that the tilt only cost me about 3-4k of profits (i say "only" but it's still obv unacceptable).

Fortunately towards the end of the month I ran way way above expectation and was able to recoup a lot of the losses from earlier in the month, but anytime a losing month occurs, especially when you're playing professionally, it stings pretty badly.

The funny thing was, one of my students asked "so did you play a lot better at the end of the month to win all that back?" and I can say with confidence the answer is "no". It's just the variance of poker so many people don't understand. Even those that have played hundreds of thousands of hands. I think I was playing much better poker from hand 1 to hand 14,000 than I was from hand 32k - 38k. It's just how it goes sometimes... for most of the month I got setup and coolered left and right, at the end of the month things went my way. I'm definitely not proud of the fact that I had a losing month of poker, given that I do this for a living, but I'm not going to hide my results because I'm worried about my "image" to the online poker community. If people want to make judgements about me based on graph of a bad month, then that's fine.

In other not so great news, the head coach at So Miss (where my dad coaches the d-line) got fired last week after 14 straight winning seasons and 10 bowl appearances. Typically that means most of the staff will also be let go, but usually they keep one or two coaches on staff to ease the transition with the players. It's looking likely that dad will be one of those kept on, if he wants, but it's not a 100% certainty. It does look like this year will be a big turnover year, which is always nice in the college football biz when you're looking for a job. CFB coaching is one of the most cutthroat businesses out there, kind of amazing actually.

There are some exciting things coming up in December and January that I'm looking forward to. I'll write more as details can be released. Preemas.com is still coming along but again we've hit a bit of a lull on the development. There's currently a really bizarre bug in the site that I can't figure out and it's really annoying. Somehow old code is being cached somewhere and I can't figure out how to remove it.

One thing that my parents always instilled in me was to help out other people. Missy and I have grabbed several items for needy kids this Christmas. It's fun to go pick out things for people, especially when you know they would likely have very little without anyone's help. I'm certainly not looking for any applause, as plenty of other people do way more for others than I do, but it does give you a good feeling. Especially around Christmas time.

I guess I'm becoming a softy in my old age of almost 27.

December is going to be a crazy busy month with lots of travelling around and Christmas and poker and side projects. Hopefully I'll have more time to dedicate to this blog but it feels like every free moment of my time is spent answering questions for my students on our private forum.

Good luck,
WoT
