Back from all my travels

Last 2 weeks or so has been pretty wild with traveling all over. Two weekends ago i was down in MS to visit my mom and dad and catch So. Miss's homecoming game and win vs SMU. It was fun to see mom and relax in the dirtay-souf for a while. During all of October, but especially the last two weeks, my time has been cram packed with working on me and my uncle's site Preemas.com which we finally got semi launched (at least it's up on the server -- still quite a few bugs to fix and functional pieces we need to add) as well as lots of coaching hours, responding to lots of threads on the +EV Poker forums and finally a little bit of my own poker playing. I've only played about 17,000 hands and I've run pretty bad this month so I'm down about 4k right now.

I'm not that worried about it. I plan on trying to get a lot of hands in this last week of October and I'm confident I can pull out of the down turn. 17k hands is nothing in terms of variance at 5/10 and 10/20. If a few hands at 10/20 hold I'm in decent shape for the month. that's how it goes though.

Another new student is starting this week which brings my regular students up to about 7 now. I've had a lot of interest shown from some 2+2 coaching threads in both small stakes NL and mid stakes NL forums and just general interest in my blog. I'd like to do a video for my students sometime soon but I haven't had the opportunity being so busy with everything else.

So this last weekend I traveled out to Huntington, WV to visit my sister which conveniently coincided with the So Miss v Marshall game that was last night (also broadcast on ESPN). Marshall Univ, usually a very strong school (where my dad used to be defensive coordinator) has slipped a bit in the last few years after my dad and head coach Bob Pruett left. The old defensive coordinator from “the” ohio state univ took over the head coaching spot and although pop had the opportunity to stay he chose to head down to MS to be closer to Mom. Thankfully he did.

The game only was in doubt late in the 4th quarter where Marshall tried to make a run at winning but the golden eagles held onto the lead they gained in the first quarter. It was really weird for me to be on the other side of the stadium this weekend as for 5 years we were bleeding green when dad was coaching at Marshall. For the second year now we’ve been rooting against them (at least, whenever it effects So Miss). Last year we saw the game down in Hattiesburg, MS so this was the first time dad had been back up in Huntington, WV to coach. As old MAC and current CUSA schools know, Marshall has never been an easy place to play, especially when all the hillbillies are smashed and screaming and used to winning. This year seemed a bit different as Marshall is probably the best winless team in the country (ya I know, not saying a whole lot, but they really are pretty good on offense). The crowd was dead for the most part and the old tradition of “empty the stadiuim during half time to get the drunkenness recharged” didn’t seem to hold true. Instead it was “empty the stadium because we have no hope of winning”.

One older gentlemen before the game who saw me decked out in the So Miss hat and shirt actually welcomed me to Huntington. He had no way of knowing that my family had lived there for 5 years (and sister still there) but it was a nice gesture. I was semi surprised at the hospitality. It took all the way until the few remaining minutes of the 4th quarter when the game was out of reach for The Herd when the more familiar side of the fans came out. “Southern Miss sucks!” one of West Virginia’s finest shouted at me as he was about to walk out of the stadium.” Three simple words came out of my mouth in response: “Oh-and-seven” I replied. Pwnd.

When we weren't at the game, my sis and I were reliving our youth by playing some video games, watching TV and just generally making each other laugh. It was a great time and it really reminds me how thankful I am to have such a great family. If family isn’t something you regularly sit back and express thanks for, you should. I’m very blessed/lucky in that regard.

So this week I really need to focus on wisely spending my time to get plenty of hands in, organize coaching schedules, and still find time to work on our website.

Time out

I’m so freaking cramped in this airplane right now. Have you seen that commercial where the guy has knees jammed against the seat in front of him, his laptop on the meal tray and the person in front of him slammed back the seat in recline mode. That is me right now with the added bonus that the drink cart is stopped at my row so my arm/elbow/leg must be 100% confined within the seat. I’m 6’4” about 210lbs so I’m not exactly the smallest guy on the plane. If I was claustrophobic this would be really baddddd

Time in

Ok random observation time:

-For the first time ever I’ve witnessed someone drinking bottled water through a straw stuck into the bottle. Weird…
-Have you ever heard someone use the phrase “Same difference” ? Were they ever actually comparing two differences that were the same/similar? I’ve never heard it used like that which makes me wonder how the phrase ever came to be.
-Have you ever noticed that at all airport baggage claims everyone crowds up to the front way before their bags even get there? Several times I’ve noticed this phenomenon… usually when at the baggage claim I stand a good 3-4 feet back from the conveyor belt because I figure if everyone did that it would be simple enough for each person to swoop in and snag their bag as it’s coming down. Instead people just act like you aren’t there and step directly in front of you to stand awaiting their luggage…and with everyone crammed up there obviously some senior citizen gets screwed out of any chance of getting their bags.
-Have you ever noticed that many TV shows are advertised as “All-New” when in fact many episodes are only partially new or not new at all? That’s really annoying to me. Like those shows at the beginning of a the season where they recap everything that happened in the previous season. They always say “All-new” but in fact little or none of the episode is new at all.

I guess that’s it. Prob blog again sometime this week then do an October recap at some point.

Good luck, play well, or at least run hot.

Crazy world we live in

I thought I'd post a little life update today since it's been a while. I'm pretty drained. It's about 3:30am now and I'm wrapping up some programming that I'm doing on the site my uncle and I have been working on. We're making good progress and I think I can get an initial release up on Friday if we put our minds to it. I haven't worked on the site much today though since I spent 7 hours coaching. It was a long day and most of my students ran awful which is always tough for me to watch (I think it tilts me more than them, in general). So many ridiculous spots like inducing 5bet AI shoves with our AA and losing, getting 4 outed by donkeys who check behind their 2pair on the turn, and more. It was tough to swallow but we played real solid and there wasn't much that could be done differently. 7 hours is a long time to watch/analyze/articulate poker but it's fun nonetheless.

In other life news, one of my dad's colleagues on the Southern Miss football staff just got diagnosed with testicular cancer. Here's the link to the story. Apparently he had it years ago and now it has come back. It's terribly sad, he has a nice wife and two young daughters. This particular type of cancer is supposed to be easier than most to cure but it's still a scary thing. Being a cancer survivor myself I'm sure his greatest fear is having it come back, as it is my greatest fear. My thoughts and prayers go out to he and his family. I hope they make it through healthy in mind and body but I know how badly it can take a toll on everyone involved.

On less serious business, poker has been up and down this month but so far after 9k hands or so i'm up about 4k. I'm down slightly at 10/20 but played just shy of 1000 hands there, doing well at 5/10 though. It's been hard for me to get a lot of hands in lately with the different projects as well as coaching.

This weekend Missy and I are headed down to Mississippi to visit my mom and dad and see one of dad's games down in Hattiesburg. They play SMU this weekend who is probably in the middle of the road in CUSA but So Miss hasn't been playing up to their potential lately... hopefully they can come through with a solid victory.

Monday I had one last interview with the head of the "Youth Friends" volunteer organization that I'm going to start with next week. It was mainly one final screening to ensure I'm not some creep. It looks like I'll be starting next week working with a few kids in Missy's second grade classroom. Mostly I think it will involve eating lunch, tutoring, and generally just being a friend/role model to some of these kids who have no male influence in their lives. It'll be an interesting experience I'm sure.

Alright that's about it. Sorry this entry was pretty boring but it's all I got for now. If you're at all the religious type, please pray for my dad's friend Jay Hopson to help him successfully fight his returning cancer.

September Recap

I'll try to keep this short and sweet but I wanted to post up the graph of how september ended up. It was a much needed confidence boost to run well and play well for most of the month. I accomplished my goal of playing fewer than 50k hands but not by much. I actually played more than the 38,000 hands shown here but those hands weren't caught by PT and it was during the 25% action share I was doing with 4 guys during my NYC trip. Overall we lost a lot sharing action even though individually I would have profited. That's how it goes sometimes. Hard lesson learned. Had I played those 7-8k hands on my own instead of sharing action in NYC I would have ended up well into the +30k range but you live and learn...as it is, this graph just shows the hands I played for myself.

Overall I'm very happy with how I played in september and obviously happy with the results. I've taken a little stumble in October, but nothing I can't recover from as long as I keep playing well. I'm trying to push forward to playing more 10/20nl, using good game selection of course. I hit some bad spots early this month at the higher stakes but overall I think I can definitely compete there. I feel like my hand reading skills are getting better and spending the time to coach and analyze hands on the forums I created for my students is reinforcing that.

Something I'm going to try this month is anytime I have two consecutive losing days I'm going to drop way down several levels on the 3rd day just to make sure I keep my head on straight. Even if it's just variance kicking me in the butt I think it'll be good to just drop way down and try to erase the "get it back quick" mentality that seems to be the downfall of so many online poker players. Anything you can do to separate yourself from the results, in my opinion, is worth it... so I'm going to give this new technique a try.

I think cutting down on the tables has helped... also cutting down on the AIM'ing during sessions also is good as I've mentioned before.

The month of October is going to be pretty busy for me. On the weekend of Oct 13th Missy and I are headed down to Mississippi to visit mom and catch a Southern Miss football game. Then the following weekend I'm headed to Huntington, WV to visit my sister for a weekend where we'll see Southern Miss vs Marshall. Also my uncle and I finally got our server and now that things have calmed down a bit we're going to push forward with our website harder. I'm in the process of doing lots of linux/tomcat/apache configuration which totally sucks for a n00b like myself. There's also a good chunk of programming that still needs to be done. So lots of work there.

Also this morning I had my "Youth Friends" training where it looks like I'll have 2 elementary school kids at the school Missy teaches at. I'll be sort of a role model/mentor to these kids assigned to me. We'll play games, eat lunch and I'll help them with their studies in some capacity. I think it'll be a very rewarding experience and I'm looking forward to a good excuse to get off the computer and out of the house. I want to make volunteer work a bigger priority in my life even though I feel like I'm busy as hell with playing poker, coaching, and the website stuff. I need to make time to have a life goal that doesn't revolve around making money.

Ok that's it for now... here's a quick and dirty list of October goals:

-Play 40-50k hands, at least 10k hands at 10/20.
-Drop down immediately when not playing my best and/or running bad
-Continue coaching. I'm very happy with the students I have but I'd like to add another one or two regulars.
-Get my feet wet being a Youth Friend
-Launch the website me and my uncle have been working on (lol goal now for 3 straight months)
-Figure out what other types of volunteer work I'm going to do
-Begin working out regularly again (how am I going to fit this in with everything else?)

Good luck,
Aaron
